Golfer Stays Sharp in Summer

Senior Hopes to Break Personal, School Records

Contributing Writer

Coming off of a season in which he broke a school record and narrowly missed advancing to the state tournament, Northwest golfer Jordan Hoffman is honing his craft this summer to to try to accomplish a few more goals before his high school career is complete.

Hoffman is competing in two tournaments this summer and said he believes Northwest is in good shape for the coming school seasons.

"I am going to try to work on my short game, just chipping and putting this summer," Hoffman said. "I think that’s the area of my game that needs the most work."

Hoffman is participating in the Houston Open and Texas Junior Open this summer.

"Those are really my big tournaments that I’ve signed up for so far," Hoffman said. "But I am probably going to try to play in a lot of single-day tournaments around here, and try to win a few of those. I would like to get a couple of wins under my belt this summer."

Hoffman, who won the Fort Worth City tournament last summer, said he thought Northwest did well last school year, but said he also sees a lot of room for improvement.

"I thought last year, we had a solid team, and we played pretty well, but we didn’t play as well as we would have liked to in district," Hoffman said.

"We definitely should have made it out and been to regionals. In the spring, I got to region and barely missed going to state. I was actually in it until the last day and barely lost it."

Hoffman broke the school’s lowest season scoring average with 74.19 last year, and his goal for the coming year is to break the single-day record of 68.

Hoffman said he feels the Northwest golf team looks pretty strong for the coming season and said he thinks most of the players are doing what they can to make the 2008-2009 campaign a success.

"I think that we’re going to be pretty good this year," Hoffman said. "I am definitely working my hardest this summer to hopefully get my game at its peak, and I have been talking to a lot of my teammates who have been doing the same thing."

Hoffman has two personal goals for the coming season.

"I want to get my scoring average down to 72 or below," Hoffman said. "Then, of course, I want to break the single-day scoring record."

Hoffman is looking at Texas Christian University and the University of Texas at Austin as places he would like to go to college.
